indoor activities for kids in northern va

Happy New Year and welcome to my new website!
What do you think?! For those who follow, my blog posts in the past were only sneak peeks of sessions. I'm changing it up this year and writing anything from photography tips to things that I find interesting or helpful to both my readers and myself. Don't worry, I'll still post some sneak peeks here and there. ;)

It's been a busy start to 2018 for Eunice Kim Photography and while I've been busy trying to provide a new fresh look for my business, my days at home with my girls have been s-l-o-w. After Christmas we got hit with a burst of freezing weather and it's been too cold for my little ones to play outside. I know many of you, especially parents/caregivers who stay at home, can relate to how painful it can be when you can't get outside and burn off some energy!

With that said, I thought it would be perfect to share some of the best indoor play options in the area for toddlers & older kids to help you get out the door during inclement weather. I definitely haven't been to ALL of the play places in the area (will list those at the bottom) so if you have any other suggestions or reviews, please do share and I could add it to this post! :)

Hope this helps the little ones burn off some of that energy!
*Most of these are also great birthday locations too.

1. NOOK PLAY SPACE5649 Lee Highway, Arlington, VA
HOURS: Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm
Reservations highly recommended!!! Buy tickets online.
Ages 0-4

One of my favorites! This is a perfect place to go kill a few hours+ anytime of the week. It's modern and clean. They don't have overstimulating toys and created a place where kids can be creative, learn, run around, and more. The nooks are themed so you can expect change throughout the year, keeping it fresh for the kids. They also have fun classes & events. There's a limit to the number of children who can play at once which means you'll have to plan ahead.

2. SCRAMBLE5412 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304
HOURS: Monday–Thursday: 9:00am – 6:00pm, Friday: 9:00am – 8:00pm, Saturday: 9:00am – 8:00pm, Sunday: 9:00am – 6:00pm, Federal Holidays: 9:00am – 6:00pm
Ages crawlers - 8 year olds (10 year olds can play with younger siblings)

I love this place for my girls because it caters to both (my girls are currently 16 months & 3 years). They have a wonderful soft play area for crawlers, a soft pretend play area for toddlers, a reading corner, & a gym with climbing and slides for toddlers & older ones. Towards the back there's a great open area for playing a bit of soccer. There's a snack bar for breaks, great seating areas, and for those with severe food allergies like mine, you can bring your own snacks. For those looking to take a new book home, it's connected to a little Usborne bookstore. A huge bonus in the winter time is that the employees are consistently cleaning the play areas. Recommend weekday - weekends are busier & double the admission price.

One of my go-to locations during the weekday if I need the girls to run and jump. (Don't be scared away by the shopping center! Ha! It's run down but Beehive isn't.) They have an under 2 zone with infant/toddler toys, building area, 4+ bounce houses for various ages, a soft gun shooting zone, bumper cars, and video game room. A full service cafe is also connected.

HOURS: Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Ages: crawlers to under 48" in height

A unique, fun, and vibrant place for crawlers to about age 3-4. Small but unique. Soft play area for crawlers, slides, bouncing area, balloons, climbing bars, and more. For the older ones who can play on their own, you can easily watch from the sitting area while you work or read without worry. Great location next to Chik-fil-A and other fast food restaurants. You can bring your own food so that's a bonus. Second location in Maryland for those across that way.

Kid Junction has a little bit of everything for everyone. They have infant and toddler play zones, climbing playground with tubes and slides, and an arcade for the older ones. There's a peanut-free cafe for snack breaks. If you have a child under 2 and an older one, this is a little harder to keep an eye on both - the cafe splits the infant side and gym/arcade area. Definitely recommended for older kids - ages 4+.

If you have energetic kids who love trampolines, this place is a great way for the whole family to burn some energy! Both kids & adults can jump, climb, and tumble around. They have a toddler area for the littlest ones, variety of trampoline areas, and an arcade upstairs. You'll have to purchase their socks, but once you have them, just reuse them for future visits.

Other indoor play places that I personally have not been to in the area:

- Play, Work, Dash 8214-B Old Courthouse Road, Vienna, VA, 22182

I haven't tried this one but definitely sounds amazing for those who work from home and need to take care of business while the kids play!

- Kids Choice Sport & Fun Center 13000 Sport and Health Dr. Woodbridge, VA 22192
Hours: Sunday - Thursday 9AM - 10PM, Friday - Saturday 9AM - 10PM
Another big one on my list to try. They have a pool (with an obstacle course!), bounce houses, toddler areas, sport fields, & laser tag all under one roof.

Additional ideas outside the box of indoor play:

If you're really brave, you can go hit up one of the free museums in DC! My daughter was only 2 when she went to the Smithsonian Natural Museum of Natural History and she LOVED it! She was fascinated by all the animal, insect, and dinosaur exhibits. Go early in the morning to avoid the large crowds.

Have a child who's into spaceships and airplanes? Go check out the National Air & Space Museum in Dulles, VA for free (pay parking but free after 4PM)! There's also a McDonalds located inside.

Don't want to commit several hours to one of these places listed? Go hit up your closest shopping mall (Springfield, Tysons Corner, Fair Oaks, Potomac Mills, etc.) and let the kids run around the play area for a bit! It's free!

Note: Please check websites for the most up to date information on times/location, rules & regulations.

Lots of Love - Eunice
